Photographer Of The Week

Derek Frankowski

Derek's path to becoming a photographer started 33 years ago, with his father. As a boy, Derek's dad would take him out to explore the country around his prairie home, often finding adventures in ordinary places. They spent countless hours outdoors, looking closely at nature and the environment. This time together formed the foundation for Derek's work and was burned into his imagination.

In 1998 Derek kicked off his professional photography career with a bang - landing the cover of Bike Magazines prestigious Photo Annual. Derek spent the next decade traveling the globe with camera in hand capturing mountain biking and the culture around it. A specialized approach to the work allowed Derek to capture some of the most iconic images the young sport has seen, and helped him rise to the top of the field.

In 2005 Derek began the biggest creative journey of his career. After being ignited with inspiration Derek picked up a Cinema Camera and co-created the multiple award winning film 'Life Cycles.' Derek shared the work of Director, DP, Producer, and Editor on the film which was released in 2010 to audience and critical acclaim. The film, which was screened around the world, has gone on to be what many consider the bench mark for action sports films.

Derek's unique ability to tell stories, both in still and moving images, has garnered him a very strong reputation as a visual storyteller. The next phase of Derek's work will see him continuing to communicate in different mediums as well as exploring new subject matter.

Living with his beautiful family in small town BC, Frankowski's work is still reflected by his surroundings and finding adventure in ordinary places.

Ricky Adam

Most shoots Bmx but in a very urban feel. I really enjoy his grunge outlook on the sport. "I was born and raised in Northern Ireland and first discovered photography at the age of 16 after I took a few photos with a camera from my friend’s dad, but I never had the money to buy a camera of my own until I turned 19. As soon as that happened, I was terminally hooked." said Ricky
